How many dhyanas there are?

In Buddhist tradition, there are four main dhyanas, also known as the Four Jhanas or Four Dhyana States. These states are described as levels of meditative absorption that lead to progressively deeper states of tranquility and insight.

The Four Dhyanas are:

  1. First Dhyana: This state is characterized by initial detachment from the senses, a deep sense of inner joy and contentment, and sustained attention to a single object of focus.
  2. Second Dhyana: This state is characterized by an even deeper sense of inner joy and contentment, along with a sense of "inner light" or clarity that arises from the meditative absorption.
  3. Third Dhyana: In this state, the sense of inner joy and contentment is transcended, and the meditator experiences a sense of equanimity and detachment from all mental states.
  4. Fourth Dhyana: This state is characterized by a deep sense of inner peace and tranquility, along with a complete detachment from all mental states and a deep sense of spiritual insight.

It is important to note that the descriptions of these states may vary slightly depending on the particular tradition or school of Buddhism. Additionally, some traditions may describe additional levels or stages of meditative absorption beyond the Four Dhyanas.
